Our Research Initiatives
Our group studies neuroparasitology — a field of biology that explores how parasites manipulate the nervous system. We are most interested in how zombie fungi from the Eryniopsis and Ophiocordyceps genera affect beetles. By investigating how these fungi change beetle behavior, we aim to better combat agricultural pests like the red palm weevil.
Our group also performs pedagogical research to understand how active learning techniques can improve teaching and learning at the university level. We use technology like VR to provide a sense of immersion that is hard to convey with traditional resources like textbooks. Currently, we are also pursing research projects about how AI is impacting learning.
About The Lab
Meet the ZomBeetles team! We’re a passionate group of researchers exploring how zombie fungi hijack the brains of beetles and how we can inspire better ways to teach science!
Welcome to our public engagement hub! Learn about our citizen science project ZomBeetles and how you can join our team of zombie beetle hunters! We hope to see you soon!
Browse our collection of publications! Here you can find papers on neuroparasitology and pedagogical resources about how active learning and technology can be used to improve science education.
We welcome your curiosity! Whether you simply have some questions about our research or would like to set up an event with one of our team members, we would love to hear from you! We are always excited to share our passion for science!
